Hi guys, Elliott here!

Valentine’s day is around the corner and I’m sure your wallet is getting really hurt, hahaha!

Today we’re talking about choosing a name for your Big Idea, the life changing new project that you’ve been thinking about, and now you’re finally getting ready to take action and making it a reality.

Yesterday I asked a random person if he had ever thought about opening his own business, he replied yes, to which I asked, "why have you not started it?", he said "I don’t have the capital". Big mistake, don’t ever let something like this stop you from achieving your dream, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the capital, that will come later, for now concentrate on starting the basic steps, like researching about your idea and getting a name for it, the capital, you can worry about that later.

When you choose a name for your business, you should consider factors like culture, words that are common for us can mean an insult in other countries, and specially in Florida where we have such an amazing mix of cultures living together we have to be aware of that. When you go into the business world, you have to leave out your personal beliefs, of course you’re not going to do illegal stuff, but your main purpose as a business owner has to be serving others and make a profit out of it. Then choosing a name that isn’t offensive to anyone should be your main goal.

Another factor is the meaning of your name, you may want to name your business “Blue Paradise” and it sounds nice if you’re opening a resort but if you’re doing a cake business, you’re going to be explaining to a lot of people what your business is about. The business name should explain itself, like “Blue Paradise Cakes” or “Paradise Cakes” and then just by seeing your name customers will know what you do.

One of the most important things is to find if your business name is available in the state and online, some people are not willing to negotiate on their name idea and if they find that their name is being used by another company, they just choose to do a variation, like if “Blue Paradise Cakes” is taken, they go for something like “Blue Paradise Cakes Experts”. The problem with that is that when people hear the name, they first think about your competitor. Second, when they search for your business online they'll always find your competitor on the results. Last but not least, you’re going to sound like you copied them.

Your business name should make you stand out from the crowd, the possibilities are that your idea is being done by another company, but you know how to do it better, you will be more professional, detail oriented better customer service, and much more. That’s why there is always space for a new company, think about Blockbuster, who would have ever thought that a simple Red Metal Box, alone in the corner of a store will take down a huge, giant company like Blockbuster.

Don’t get discouraged, the first step is to have the will to change your life, second, start designing the idea or concept, even if you don’t have the capital, third, start looking for a name that is unique, don’t get discouraged, dare to dream, that’s how everything starts.

I’ll be bringing you more information about tips and secrets to start your own business in Florida so, leave a comment below. Comment if you have questions you want me to answer about starting a business. I love hearing from you!
